If you are fishing the lake for an upcoming tournament listen up, here's the scoop.
I fished the Northeast part of the lake and then fished all the way down to across the damn near Alligator cove..that place was barren down there...water temperature was mid 50's....the water temp in the creeks on the north west are are all about 65 degrees...that is where I found the most bass activity. There are plenty of buck bass that have moved up into shallow water...up to 6inches and sometimes less! Go all the way back to they very back of the creeks and fish your way out...look for clear water and clumps of grass..they nest right inside it. I found schooling bass at the mouths of creeks in 2-3' of water near flats of 1-2' of water...seems like the bass were killing small shad in those creeks. The water clarity is really stained almost muddy stained...the bigger fish I found deeper as I followed the creek out into the cover in 4-8' of water on brush piles and stumps.. seems like the big girls are moving in but all haven't moved up yet. We are still early on the spawn there are a ton of beds that are empty without fish on them..this warm weather this week may push more up on those beds.
I didn't use too many baits because the fluke was working so well. I tried a crankbait in deeper water 4-8' no luck and I tried a 9in glide where the bass were schooling to try to get a bigger fish to bite but they were not having it...I matched the little 3inch shad that were dying everywhere and that was the ticket.
What to use!
Number 1 bait was the watermelon green fluke... 5inch...I caught about 12 on that...texas rig with a 1/4 black tungsten weight.
My two biggest came from a lead head minnow 3 inch fluke in the same color...a 4lber and a 5lber...
You can also catch them on creature baits like baby brush hogs and small lizards..the smaller baits caught way more fish for me...
The fish are active and biting, so expect a lot of smaller fish which for a slot lake is good..(but I'm not sure if the slot applies if you are on a kayak tournament).. either way the fishing is fun with almost 15 bass yesterday and missed about 6...great day for numbers.
Good luck this week!
